Ruhr IV - Zeche Zollverein
This is the final post that completes the mini series of post about my trip to the Ruhr area. On my last day, I went to the Zeche Zollverein which is a former coal mine and coking plant.
It’s the most famous industrial site in the area and made it on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Since the weather was amazing in the morning, I first skipped the museum and instead started with a walk through the coking plant.
Some parts were fenced off but a large portion of the outside of the plant is freely accessible. The large parking lots available here showed that in the summer it most likely gets very busy here.
Eventually - when the weather had turned and it started raining - I made my way back to the mining part of the complex and participated in a guided tour. Our guide was a former worker in the mine which made this very authentic.
Unfortunately, the underground parts of the mine are not accessible anymore so we just followed the coal processing above ground.
I finished the day with a visit to the museum where I particularly enjoyed a photography exhibit with picture of workers and their families in their everyday life.
And finally, I couldn’t resist to take pictures of the staircase in the museum connecting the different levels.
